Car wash equipment costs in 2026: what a tunnel package, pay stations, vacuums and chemistry really run
A new express tunnel budget starts with a clear equipment scope and written prices. This guide lays out 2026 price ranges for a 100 to 150 foot tunnel package, pay stations, vacuums, water reclaim and chemistry, with figures marked as actual, estimate or assumption. We are operators and equipment distributors in Charlotte. We will show our numbers, name our sources, and tell you where public data runs out.
The equipment and installation budget for a 2026 express tunnel
Our planning case assumes a typical 2026 express build: a 100 to 150 foot tunnel, two pay lanes, 20 to 30 vacuum stations, water reclaim with reverse osmosis, and chemistry for a full retail menu (assumptions). Prices are Southeast US, 2026 dollars. The table covers equipment and installation; freight is quoted separately and excluded from the subtotal. Land, building and site work sit outside it. Wash Launch Group's published all-in Southeast greenfield budget is $4.0M to $7.5M for 2026 (estimate). This covers owned real estate, including land and site work. Terrapin's national range is $2.5M to $8M+ (estimate).
| Line item | Low | High | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
Tunnel conveyor and arches, 100 to 150 ft | $550,000 | $800,000 | Estimate |
Dryers | $60,000 | $150,000 | Estimate |
Pay stations and POS, two lanes with LPR and RFID | $200,000 | $350,000 | Estimate, WLG planning range |
Vacuums, 20 to 30 stations plus canopies | $200,000 | $325,000 | Estimate, WLG planning range |
Water reclaim and reverse osmosis | $130,000 | $200,000 | Estimate, WLG planning range |
Chemistry startup, system plus opening inventory | $70,000 | $110,000 | Estimate, WLG planning range |
Signage and controls | $25,000 | $75,000 | Estimate |
Installation, complete, by a professional car wash installation team | $200,000 | $300,000 | Actual, typical of our team's projects |
Freight, quoted by the manufacturer; get it in writing | Manufacturer quote | Manufacturer quote | Not estimated; excluded from installation and subtotal |
Equipment and installation subtotal, before freight and tax | $1,435,000 | $2,310,000 | Estimate, sum of equipment estimates and actual installation range |
The pay station, vacuum, reclaim and chemistry rows are estimates based on Wash Launch Group's published May 2026 planning ranges. They are not manufacturer list prices or verified invoices. The installation range is actual and typical of our team's projects. Installation is handled by a professional car wash installation team, and electricians and plumbers make the electrical and plumbing connections. The figure covers the complete installation; freight is excluded. Estimate identifies a planning range; assumption identifies an input or scenario; actual identifies a reported historical or company figure. Equipment rows are supply allowances, installation is counted once, and tax is excluded (assumptions). Check whether a quote already includes installation before adding it. Confirm scope, taxes and freight in current written quotes. Nothing here is a binding quote.
Cross-check: Terrapin puts tunnel equipment alone at $500K to $2M+ (estimate, cited, April 2026). That is a broad published range with a different scope from our equipment and installation subtotal. A re-equip is priced from the condition of what stays in place and a fresh written quote, not from a percentage of the new-build table.
What drives the range
Equipment budgets can differ by hundreds of thousands of dollars; five things explain the gap.
Tunnel length and throughput target
Terrapin describes 85 foot tunnels as constrained for loading and drying and reports that many large-operator prototypes use 120 to 140 feet (actual, cited). Length adds conveyor, arches and dryers, so spec to your realistic Year 3 volume, not your best Saturday.
Brand and service network
Sticker price between major tunnel brands is often within 10 to 15 percent (estimate). The bigger variable is service response: techs within 30 minutes beat a cheaper package with a 90 minute radius.
A lower purchase price can come with a higher operating cost. Assume a $40K equipment saving, eight extra downtime hours per month and $400 per hour in foregone revenue. The annual revenue at risk is 8 × $400 × 12 = $38,400 (assumption and calculated illustration, Wash Launch Group). This is revenue, not profit, and is not an observed loss.
Finishes and add-ons
Wheel blasters, underbody wash, triple foam, ceramic top coats, extra dryer banks, LED show. Terrapin estimates a 2x cost spread between basic and premium packages of the same tunnel length (estimate, cited). Under-spec'd dryers are the most common quality complaint on new builds; if forced to choose, buy the second dryer bank over a third arch (estimate).
Water rules
Terrapin estimates water treatment at $50K to $250K, recovery of 60 to 80% of wash water and a 2 to 4 year payback (estimates, cited). Confirm local requirements and calculate savings from your water and sewer rates; water recovery and savings on the total utility bill are different measures.
Steel, tariffs and freight
Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs rose from 25% in March 2025 to 50% in June 2025 (actual, cited, White House). US steel prices climbed after the 50% rate took effect (actual, cited, EUROMETAL, June 2026). Construction inputs rose modestly in 2025 per Gordian's RSMeans data: materials up 3.1%, labor up 4.1%, and equipment up 4.5% (actual, cited). These are general construction inputs, not a car wash-specific index. Freight is quoted by the manufacturer; get it in writing. It is excluded from the installation figure and the equipment and installation subtotal.
The brand landscape in 2026 and who owns what
Several corporate groups supply tunnel equipment, POS and chemistry for US builds. Compare the local service network as carefully as the equipment brand.
- Dover (NYSE: DOV) owns OPW Vehicle Wash Solutions: PDQ, Belanger, ICS (January 2021), Kesseltronics and Transchem (January 2024) (actual, cited).
- Vontier (NYSE: VNT) owns DRB (acquired September 2021 for $965M); platforms Patheon, SiteWatch and Washify; Super Star announced a 118-site move to Patheon in May 2026 (actual, cited).
- Genstar owns Sonny's Enterprises (since August 2020), with factory-owned service in the Southeast and a Fiserv payment integration announced in December 2024 (actual, cited).
- Berkshire Partners owns National Carwash Solutions: MacNeil, Ryko, Vacutech and PurClean, with three chemistry lines unified as NCS Chemistry in May 2024 (actual, cited).
- Independents and specialists: Coleman Hanna, WashTec and Tommy offer wash systems; Washworld builds touch-free and soft-touch in-bay automatics; AVW supplies conveyors; Hamilton supplies payment equipment; Motor City Wash Works supplies tunnel equipment; Kleen-Rite is a national parts distributor and a pricing reference (actual, cited).
Pick the brand with trained techs closest to your site; if it is not one we distribute, we will say so. In our experience, shared regional inventory can help, and we estimate 24 to 72 hours for stocked critical wear parts in the Southeast. Confirm availability for the specific part and location.
What changed since 2024
Since 2024, Dover folded Transchem into OPW Vehicle Wash Solutions, DRB expanded Patheon deployments, and National Carwash Solutions unified its chemistry brands (actual, cited). The capital cycle turned: ZIPS filed Chapter 11 in February 2025 with $654M of debt, Driven Brands sold Take 5 to Whistle Express for $385M, and Mister Car Wash announced a $3.1B take-private in February 2026, completed in May 2026 (actual, cited). In our view, changes in ownership can create used-equipment opportunities, but condition, compatibility and service support still decide whether a purchase makes sense.
Lead times and the ordering timeline
Public factory lead times are scarce. Obtain a written production and delivery window from the manufacturer. Lead time from purchase order to delivery and installation time are separate clocks. Installation starts once the equipment is delivered and the building and utilities are ready. Work backwards from your target opening month.
- Permitting: Terrapin estimates 2 to 6 months, with water discharge and environmental reviews often setting the pace (estimate, cited). Allow separately for design and any site-specific approvals.
- Equipment order: once permits look likely and the slab is scheduled. Standard OPW/Belanger configurations run 12 to 18 weeks from PO to delivery (estimate, confirm with the manufacturer); custom configurations and high-demand periods can extend lead time.
- Build: Terrapin estimates 7 to 12 months for an express tunnel, or 7 to 8 with design-build (estimate, cited).
- Installation and commissioning: 4 to 8 weeks once the equipment is delivered and the building and utilities are ready (actual, typical of our team's projects).
- Parts after opening: 24 to 72 hours on critical wear parts in the Southeast (estimate, cited to Wash Launch Group).
Order the long-lead tunnel package before the steel goes up; hold short-lead items like vacuums until the site is close. Get delivery windows in writing, and ask whether the contractor's schedule already includes installation before you set an opening date. Confirm electrical, gas and water specs before the slab is poured; pit rework is the line item nobody budgets.
What installation covers
Installation is where a delivered package becomes a working wash. A professional car wash installation team handles the installation. Electricians and plumbers make the electrical and plumbing connections. Commissioning includes calibration and crew training. On our team's projects, a complete installation typically costs $200,000 to $300,000 and takes 4 to 8 weeks once the equipment is delivered and the building and utilities are ready (actual). Freight is separate. Get the installation scope, including who makes the electrical and plumbing connections, written into the quote.
Financing and the cash timeline
Auto Laundry News reported the following lender ranges in April 2026 (actual, cited as historical published terms, not a current financing offer): SBA 7(a) and 504 real-estate loans run 25 years with 10 to 20% down; equipment loans run 10 years; the article cited SBA rates of 6 to 9%. Conventional loans often want 25 to 50% down. Equipment-only financing and leases run up to 7 years. Specialist lenders advertise car wash loans to $5M with 25-year terms and near-10% down (actual, cited, Ready Capital, June 2025); one broker puts SBA pricing at Prime plus 1.5 to 2.75% (actual, cited, Janover, March 2026). Ask a lender experienced in car washes to confirm available programs, rates, equity requirements and repayment terms for your project.
Cash timeline on the equipment side, typical structure (assumption; terms vary by manufacturer): 20 to 30% at order to hold the production slot, progress payments at ship and at install start, 10% retainage until acceptance testing. Carry pre-opening costs and working capital on top of the equipment budget; see our greenfield pro forma article for how we size them. For investors: size debt to the ramp, not the stabilized year; we model a 30 to 42 month ramp based on our experience (assumption). Our downside assumption is minus 15% revenue and plus 20% operating costs. Ask the lender to explain any prepayment charges; Auto Laundry News notes that they can apply to SBA loans with terms of 15 years or more.
The ongoing costs people forget
- Repairs and maintenance: 5 to 8% of revenue at a stabilized express tunnel (estimate, cited to Wash Launch Group). We carry $0.08 to $0.12 per car for recurring maintenance capital, increasing toward $0.25 or more as equipment ages (estimate based on our operating experience). Keep capital replacements separate from repairs expense.
- Chemistry: $0.65 to $0.95 per car blended for a full express package (estimate, Wash Launch Group's published Trident range). We target chemistry at 5 to 7% of revenue and investigate sites approaching 10% (estimate based on our operating experience). The lever is metering and menu engineering, not cheaper product.
- Utilities: 6 to 9% of revenue (estimate, cited).
- Software: Budget roughly $199 to $499 per month per location plus hardware as a preliminary software estimate (DetailPro comparison, June 2026); confirm tunnel POS, processing and support charges with each vendor.
- Spares and service: $15K to $30K in first-year parts and service coverage (estimate).
Mister Car Wash reported its unlimited club at roughly 79% of wash sales in Q4 2025 (actual, cited). Membership economics carry the model; pay station reliability is an equipment cost.
Five ways to overspend, and five ways to save
Overspend:
- Buying tunnel length for your best Saturday instead of your average Tuesday. Extra length you cannot feed is pure depreciation.
- Loading premium add-ons before volume justifies them. Add LED shows and ceramic arches in year two or three, from cash flow.
- Treating installation and freight as afterthoughts. A complete express tunnel installation typically costs $200K to $300K (actual, our team's projects), excluding freight. Get the installation scope, including the electrical and plumbing connections, written into the quote, and get freight quoted separately.
- Under-buying pay stations. Check peak queues before deciding whether a second lane pays for itself. Adding a second lane to an existing site runs $60K to $120K installed (estimate). The table's two-lane budget already includes both lanes and their installation.
- Choosing on sticker price alone while ignoring parts stocking and service response.
Save:
- Standardize brands across your sites. One parts room, one training program, one service relationship.
- Size reclaim to the water rule you actually face, not the biggest brochure system.
- Review price-lock terms for steel-heavy items early. Tariffs changed in 2025 (actual, cited to the White House); compare the quoted escalation terms with the cost and risk of early storage.
- Bundle POS hardware, software and card processing in one negotiation; Sonny's announced a Fiserv payment integration in December 2024 (actual, cited).
- Use the used market for non-critical gear. Used pay station kits and components may cost less than new, but asking prices exclude compatibility, installation, warranty and remaining-life risks (Carwash Consignment listings, accessed October 2026). Never buy safety-critical wear items used.
Protect wash quality and safety when making any of these tradeoffs.
Disclosure
We distribute OPW and Belanger tunnel equipment, Trident chemistry and water systems, and ICS point-of-sale. We earn distribution margin on those brands. WLG was founded in January 2026. Our team has delivered 60+ sites and closed $300M+ across our careers. That history is why we carry these lines; it also means this article is not neutral. We named Sonny's, MacNeil, DRB, Hamilton, AVW, Motor City Wash Works, Vacutech, Kleen-Rite and the independents on purpose; where a competitor has the better service network for your site, the right answer is the competitor. Verify every figure against a written quote.
